Bactrim isn’t an average acne treatment. In fact, AR Scientific didn’t originally design it to treat acne. However, this product might be a powerful acne solution.
As an acne sufferer, I’m accustomed to using store-bought products. So I wanted to learn more about Bactrim because it’s a prescription treatment. Not only did I want to find out how it works, I wanted to see if Bactrim is safe.
How to Obtain Bactrim
The first thing to know about Bactrim is not everyone can use it. It’s an FDA approved drug that requires a prescription. If you want to use Bactrim, talk to your doctor. He or she can help you decide if Bactrim is a safe solution.
How Does Bactrim Work?
Bactrim combines two antibiotics:
Both antibiotics stop bacterial growth and eliminate infections. Since acne stems from bacterial infections, Bactrim should treat the skin condition. However, I found more than 100 trimethoprim-sulamethoxazole studies and none evaluated its acne-fighting effects.
These studies did show Bactrim treats and reduces bacterial infections. So, the product may have an impact on acne. This is possible, but not proven.
What Can Bactrim Be Used For?
Bactrim is mainly marketed for these conditions:
• Ear infections
• Urinary tract infections
• Traveler’s diarrhea
However, Drugs.com says, “Bactrim may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.” On the Drugs.com page “Acne Medications,” Bactrim is listed as a treatment.
There are 11 Bactrim customer reviews on Drugs.com. These users gave the drug a 9.3/10 average rating. Here are some sample quotes:
• “Bactrim is the only thing to ever get rid of my acne.” (10/10)
• “Bactrim takes about a week before you see the changes.” (7/10)
• “Worked wonders for my acne. Amazing. Years of living with acne and this $3 a month medication clears me right up. Love it!” (10/10)
• “I have horrible hormonal acne and Bactrim has been the only systemic drug that has helped.”(10/10)
How Safe Is Bactrim?
Bactrim is safer for some people than others. Tell your doctor if you have these conditions, so he or she can decide how safe Bactrim is for you:
• Asthma or severe allergies
• Kidney or liver disease
• Folic acid deficiency
• G6PD deficiency
The biggest safety concern with Bactrim is allergic reactions. WebMD says, “This medication may rarely cause serious (possibly fatal) allergic reactions.” Do not use Bactrim if you are allergic to sulfa medications or trimethoprim. People with other allergies should exercise caution while using Bactrim, too.
If you experience these allergic reaction signs, get emergency medical help:
• Difficulty breathing
• Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat
Possible Side Effects
Even if your doctor determines Bactrim is safe for you, it may cause side effects such as:
• Loss of appetite
If these side effects persist or get worse, talk to your doctor. According to WebMD, doctors often prescribe Bactrim knowing it causes side effects because they believe the benefits are greater than the risks.
Bactrim comes in tablet or liquid form. Since it’s a prescription medication, your doctor will tell you how to use it. The best thing you can do is follow these directions exactly. Here are a few tips for taking Bactrim:
• Take the medication with 8 ounces of water
• If it upsets your stomach, take Bactrim with food or milk
• Drink plenty of fluids to prevent kidney stones
• Take Bactrim at evenly spaced intervals (antibiotics work best this way)
• Even if your acne clears up, continue taking Bactrim until the prescribed amount is gone
Is Using Bactrim the Best Way to Clear Acne?
Bactrim was not designed to treat acne and researchers haven’t tested its acne-fighting abilities. However, Bactrim continues to be prescribed as a safe, effective acne treatment. According to 11 user reviews, it clears acne well.
Not everyone can use Bactrim safely. It may cause side effects or serious allergic reactions. This is why it’s best to use Bactrim as directed under doctor supervision.
My research suggests Bactrim is an effective acne treatment. But I don’t think it’s the safest treatment. I recommend discussing your decision with a doctor.
